(Fav-93084) API: Created Widget has no synced Status with Kanban views

When creating a widget via the API, there is no "Status" field on cards created in that widget and the "View Kanban As" drop-down option is grayed out.
There is no way I can see to create a Widget via the API in such a way that I can have a Status field synced to the Kanban view columns.
Am I missing something here?
